Have you ever felt like your days just slip away, making you wonder where all that time went? That was how I also felt whenever I didn’t do time blocking, which is scheduling parts of your day on an hourly basis using a planner or calendar.
When I tell people I block EVERY SINGLE HOUR, they think it must feel too strict or suffocating. But for me, it was the complete opposite—I found more freedom THROUGH the structure. Here’s how time blocking transformed my life.
1. Realizing How Much Time I Truly Have
Time blocking helped me see how much time I actually had left for all the things I wanted to do. Instead of feeling like every single day was just passing by, I became more aware about how many hours I spend on things that didn’t really matter that much to me – like watching too much TikTok or scrolling on Facebook for too long. This awareness allowed me to make the most out of my days and make time for the things that I actually wanted to do – like painting, volunteering, and reading.
2. Preparing for Big Dreams with a Monthly View
Having a monthly view of my daily activities was a game-changer. It gave me the perspective to prepare for bigger goals and events as well. By planning my month in advance, I was able to see which days were available to ensure that I didn’t overbook and overcommit myself.
3. Having a Sense of Control and Empowerment
Before time blocking, I often felt lost and out of control. With a structured schedule, I was able to feel the security of knowing that I wasn’t missing anything important. Seeing exactly what to do and when to do it gave me a sense of direction, made me feel like I knew where I was going and who I wanted to be.
4. Identifying What Matters
Time blocking helped me carve out time for things that I really wanted to do. Whether it was allocating an entire day towards reading, making sure I had enough time to do all my grad-school assignments, and even going to the mall to shop with my friends! It also made me realize when I was doing too much – I became aware of the times when I’m about to get sick due to overworking or when I feel down because I haven’t had enough social interaction.
Conclusion
Time blocking might seem rigid at first glance, but for me, it was the key to unlocking a more fulfilling and balanced life. If you’re struggling with time management or feeling overwhelmed, give time blocking a try—you might just find the freedom you’ve been searching for.
